Significance of Anti HCV test :
Anti HCV test checks if the person has ever been infected with the Hepatitis C virus. Presence of antibodies to the Hepatitis C virus indicate that this infection is present or has been present in the past. However, this test cannot distinguish whether someone has an active or a previous HCV infection.
CDC (US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention) recommends that a positive Anti HCV test be followed by HCV RNA test that checks for viral RNA in the blood, which helps detect an active infection of Hepatitis C virus.
