SUNLIGHT IS ONE OF THE BEST SUPPLEMENT

Sun is the lifeline of living. Solar light plays important role in human.

What is sunlight?

Sun is boiling hot mass settled within the solar system. Sun emits electromagnetic radiation which is known as sunlight.  Sunlight is filtered through earth atmosphere before it reaches us.

 How long we get sunlight?

Generally, we get sunlight for 12 – 14 hours in a day. In summer sun remain with us for the longer time than that of winter. Although in the extreme part of the world’s sun remains 6 months all day long and night In other 6 months they have to manage with moon and stars.

Sunlight compositions –

Sun emits visible light, infrared, radio wave and x-ray.

  • Ultra-violet A – This less damaging to DNA , it can be artificially used for skin tanning. Too much exposure to ultra-violet A can cause cancer.
  • Ultra-violet B- It directly damages DNA and causes sun burn . Although it is required for vitamin D synthesis in mammals.
  • Ultraviolet C – it is greatly absorbed by the atmosphere so very little reaches earth.
  • Visible range light – It can be seen with our naked eye.
  • Infrared radiation –

Infrared a

Infrared b

infrared c

Why sunlight is considered as a supplement?

Our body creates vitamin d when we are in sunlight .As vitamin d has very less dietary sources. Only, the natural source we can rely in, is sunlight..

Vitamin d requirement of adult – 600 – 800 IU per day

How vitamin d syntheses occur in sunlight?

Human skin contains a natural precursor of vitamin D . when sun ultraviolet ray comes in contact with human skin , it converts the precursor into the molecule called vitamin D3. It then follows the metabolic pathway through the liver and finally to the kidney, there it get converted into calcitriol.

How much we should spend in sunlight for getting vitamin D in our body?

All this depend on the following factors

  • Amount of skin exposed- More amount of skin is exposed more vitamin d synthesis occur but it is suggested that proper care should be taken to prevent sunburn
  • Skin color – people with darker skin color take a longer time to synthesize vitamin d than people with lighter skin color.
  • Skin type – Some skin is very sensitive they can get burnt if it is exposed to sunlight.

Too much exposure may lead to sunburn and cancer, and varied skin allergies. Proper care like sunscreen, sunglass, umbrella can be used in order to protect from the delirious effect of sunlight.

Why Vitamin-D is important?

  1. vitamin d helps in calcium metabolism
  2. Vitamin d improve the function of muscle
  3. It helps to protect from cardiovascular disease
  4. Reduces the risk of different kinds of cancer
  5. Lead to stronger and healthier bone

People who reside in cold zone of the world, in need of sunlight they migrate to tropical areas.
