Starting with common one-

Why is it called Novel Corona?

It is a new type of coronavirus found in Wuhan, China. Till now scientists identified only six types of coronavirus but this coronavirus-19 is a new type. Hence it is named Novel Coronavirus. It is believed that it came in animals and spread from there to humans. This infection affects the upper respiratory tract such as the nose, ear, throat, lungs. This is a respiratory disorder.

How does it spread?

It spreads from one person to another when a person sneezes or coughs or speaks loudly as in such way the sneeze splashes transfer from the mouth infected person to another person. The virus remains on a variety of objects and surfaces when they too are touched, the virus can be spread, although coronavirus is not usually spread by food.

How do you know if you are infected?

Remember that often those people with coronavirus can be asymptotic – showing no symptoms. So, even if you are feeling fine and are not experiencing any of the symptoms of coronavirus, you could still be a carrier of COVID-19 and be a potential threat to others. Symptoms include fever, cough, fatigue and shortness of breath. In some patients, nosebleeds or diarrhoea are also observed, but its symptoms are seen in 2 to 14 days. The time from being confirmed until showing signs and symptoms is known as the incubation period.

If symptoms are not observed?

It is not right to wait for severe symptoms to appear. If you are feeling symptoms like dry cough, shortness of breath and fever, then see a doctor and get them examined under doctor call & supervision. Try to find out as soon as possible if you are infected with the coronavirus. as the incubation period involves 2-14 days you can affect many more people, thus social distancing is necessary. But 21 day of lockdown in India is implemented to avoid such circumstances.

Why is social distancing necessary?

Social distancing is a non-pharmaceutical prevention and control process implemented by the Indian government to avoid or to decrease the contact between those who are infected with a COVID-19 disease and those who are not, to stop or slow down the rate and extent of disease. In simple terms to stop the chain of coronavirus from transmission in a community.  This ultimately leads to a decrease in the spread of the disease, morbidity and death-rate. This change in behaviours of people can help in stopping the spread of the pandemic.

It is especially very important for those who are at higher risk of catching coronavirus. High-risk people include the elderly and those with compromised immune systems or other underlying health problems. By distancing themselves from the public, these high-risk individuals can protect themselves from being exposed to the virus, which can be deadly for them.

Even if you’re not considered at higher risk of catching coronavirus, it’s still very important to follow social distancing by this you’re doing your part by decreasing the possibility of spreading the virus to others.

What should you do if you had close contact with someone who has a confirmed case of coronavirus?

Self-monitor (quarantine yourself)  your health starting from the day of the last contact with an infected person and continue for 28 days. Keep an eye over the development of acute symptoms mentioned above and if you observe any symptoms then visit the nearest health centre for the advice and treatment. You must provide the details of your contact with other persons.

When should I be tested for coronavirus?

If you observe the critical symptom of respiratory illness and fever such as cough or shortness of breath you should visit nearest health facility and the doctor will decide if you need to be tested for virus or not depending upon your history of travel to China or affected countries or contact with any suspected person or lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus.
