For those who suffer from eye sight defects eye glasses are not a fashion accessory but a necessity. However, there are definite ways by which you can ascertain what works best for your style and can turn your eyeglasses into a comfortable fashion statement to enhance your looks. The key is to pay attention to certain factors while choosing your eye glasses.

There are two things which collectively determine your choice of glasses

1 Right Eye glass lenses
2 Right Eye glass Frames.

Let’s first discuss eyeglass lenses, because the health of our eyes and how happy we are with our eye wear is governed by it.

Eyeglass lenses influence vision, comfort, appearance and safety.

Material of Eyeglass lenses

a. Glass Lenses: Earlier glass lenses were the only option for vision correction but today, with numerous other better options available, glass lenses are rarely used. Moreover, glass lenses break easily and can cause potential harm to eyes.

b. Plastic lenses: They were first introduced in 1947 in California and till date are popular because of being extremely light weight, low in cost and posses high optical qualities.

c. Polycarbonate Lenses: These lenses were introduced in 2001 in eyewear segment and they have potential visual advantage, are light weight, impact resistance and block 100 percent UV.

d. High Index plastic lenses: These lenses have highest refractive index and therefore, are the thinnest lenses available which block 100 percent UV and are lightweight.

Treatment of Eye glass lenses

While choosing lenses, other than the material of Eyeglass lenses you should also pay attention to lens treatments, which are essentially of 4 different types:

i) Anti-scratch coatings provide adequate lens durability and makes eyeglass lenses nearly as scratch-resistant as glass.

ii) An anti-reflective (AR) coating eliminates reflections in lenses that reduce contrast and clarity, especially at night and makes the lenses nearly invisible and are less likely to give glare spots while being photographed.

iii) UV blocking treatment prevents eyes from damage caused by Ultra Violet rays including cataracts and macular degeneration.

iv) Photo-chromic treatment enables eyeglass lenses to darken automatically in response to the sun’s UV & HEV rays and then quickly return to clear when indoors.

Eye Glass Frames

Frames of eye glasses play a vital role in comfort and appearance. Hence, below mentioned factors should be considered while selecting frames:

a. Shape of your face:
The shape of your face determines which frames would enhance your look.

  • Round Face: square or rectangular frames augment round face by making it appear slimmer and longer by contributing in balancing your features. People with round face should avoid rimless frames or round frames.
  • Oval Face: Frames with a strong bridge look best on Oval face. You should stay away from over-large frames.
  • Square Face: Eyeglasses which sit high on the bridge of the nose enhance look of square faces by softening their angularity. Oval or round eyeglasses suit this face shape while Angular and boxy eyeglass frames will make it appear more bulky.
  • Diamond Face: Cat eye glasses and oval frames highlight your delicate features while boxy and narrow frames do the opposite to your diamond shaped face.

b. Chose colors that match your skin tone

It is believed that we have either cool (blue-based) or warm (yellow-based) skin tone and we look best in our own color base. So, it is important to choose a hue closest to our skin tone:

  • Warm Skin Tone

If your skin has a yellow, bronze or golden cast then you have a warm complexion. Shades of brown, gold, honey shade, beige, olive green will work wonders for your complexion. However, you should maintain safe distance with pastels, white and black while choosing a frame colour.

  • Cool Skin Tone

People with cool complexion have pink or blue undertones. Opt for frames that are silver, black, dark tortoise, pink, purple, blue, mauve and gray to enhance your look.

c. Lifestyle and Personality consideration

Before choosing a eye glass it is better to consider your lifestyle as in what all you will be accomplishing while wearing your eyeglasses. Flexon frames work best for active lifestyle as they twist and turn without breaking. If you have a corporate life style opt for something trendier yet sensible.

Your frames not only adorn your face but also say a lot about your personality. You should have at least two pair of glasses, one for weekdays when you are loaded with work and one for weekends to highlight your fun side. For those who are capable of affording it, might consider opting for a small collection of frames which suit your personality.

Hope the above pointers will assist you in choosing an eyeglass which complement you the best.
