FOODS &  BOWEL SYNDROME

Irritable bowel syndrome is a gut disorder associated with pain and irregular bowel habits like Diarrhoea, Constipation, different types of stools. It does not threaten life but can change the way of our living and daily routine. Women are more prone to disease and stress aggravates the disease.

Symptoms:

  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Stomach and cramps at lower end of stomach
  • bloating
  • Stools containing mucus
  • Heartburn
  • Straining bowel movement
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Tiredness
  • Poor appetite

Causes:

  • Colon and bowel muscles are not coordinating and contracting properly which affects the stool movements.
  • Lack of secretion of chemicals like serotonin and gastrin which controls the signals of brain and digestive system
  • The inability of the pancreas to secrete enough enzyme to properly digest and breakdown the food.
  • Bacterial infection
  • Irregular food habits, unhealthy foods or lactose intolerance
  • Use of different medications or iron and antacids tablets
  • Diseases like ulcerative colitis, crohn’s disease

How to Diagnose:

  • By colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy we can find out the site of blockage and inflammation of the intestine
  • Upper GI Endoscopy for heartburn and indigestion
  • Blood tests to check haemoglobin and thyroid and stool tests for infection
  • Lactose intolerance and gluten sensitivity tests

Fifteen tips to correct our IBS:

  • Avoid caffeinated beverages like coffee, teas and sodas
  • Quit smoking and avoid alcohol consumption
  • Avoid cows and buffalo’s milk .Use milk and product sparingly as they contain whey and casein which everyone can’t tolerate. Avoid it completely if there is lactose intolerance
  • Avoid junk, spicy, fried foods, meats, margarine and too many oils as these foods aggravate the symptoms of diarrhoea, constipation, bloating and stomach pain.
  • Avoid sugar, honey, sugar free sweeteners and sugar containing foods like sweets, chocolates and pastries and ice-creams.
  • Avoid foods producing gas like cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, onions, mushrooms, frozen peas, lentils, raw fruits and brussel sprouts. Better to keep records of the foods causing problem or upsets our stomach.
  • IBS caused by gluten sensitivity then avoid gluten a protein found in wheat, barley and rye.
  • Eat small and frequent meals and avoid skipping meals. Eat at scheduled time regularly. Eat low fat and high carbohydrate diet like rice, pastas, bread, whole grains, lots of fruits and vegetables.
  • Drink plenty of water and other fluids like lime water, coconut water and homemade buttermilk, soups and juices
  • Regular exercise improves normal intestinal muscle contraction and gives relaxation from depression and stress.
  • Include more soluble fibre rich foods like- Oatmeal, beans, spinach, apples, strawberries and grapefruits.
  • Include more antioxidant rich foods like- red and yellow fruits like- oranges, sweet lime, strawberries, carrots, pumpkin and tomatoes to reduce stress level.
  • Include probiotics e. homemade yoghurt, cheeses, curd which keeps our gut healthy.
  • Cautiously use antidiarrhoel medications and laxatives as they cause side effects
  • One multivitamin tablet may be taken to compensate vitamin deficiency.

IBS is a chronic disease. Though it is not a life threatening disease but can cause discomfort. There is no known cause of disease. Unhealthy life style and irregular diet are the major factor which triggers IBS. It can be controlled with proper diet, stress reduction, including probiotics and medicines recommended for short term use only.
