Eye And Ear Infections During Holi

Holi the vibrant festival of colors is celebrated with the beautiful colors. One of the major Indian festivals celebrated all round India with great enthusiasm and colorful mood. The natural colors were used to drench people during the celebration. Whereas in the present the colors used for celebrating the festive season consists of harmful chemicals and toxic substances which could prove harmful to the skin, ears and eyes. Hence, it is very important that precautions are taken before stepping out to play holi. Also, see to it the eyes and ears do not come into contact with these harmful colors as these sensory organs are delicate and vulnerable.

During the holi amongst all the body parts, the eyes and ears are the extremely susceptible. The colors are an abundant threat to eyes as well as ears because the synthetic colors compose chemicals.  The artificial colors are made up of copper sulphate, lead or iron oxides. Exposure to the chemicals in the color could result in allergy affecting the ears or eyes. Temporary blindness, itchy ears are the common threats.

 The general eye and ear related problems are:

  • The appearance of gray patches on the retina and eyesight
  • Itching, burning, tearing can be the result of using synthetic colors.
  • The artificial colors can lead to temporary blindness
  • Delay in the treatment of eyes affected by the color can cause loss of sight.
  • The ears would become itchy and reddish in color.
  • The warmness of ears is caused due to the harmful colors
  • The synthetic colors can cause emitting of discharge.

If the  holi color enters the eyes while playing holi ensure to wash it immediately with water until the irritation stops. Do not rub the eyes. It is recommended that you visit the eye specialist if the irritation continues. Ditch the contact lenses as it has the tendency to absorb the color which could make it worse. Ear blockage, swelling and internal pain is common problems one could face if ears are left neglected while playing holi. If the holi colors enter the ears it can lead to itching and rashes. Rinse immediately in contact with color and take precautions.
