Tips to combat Hypothyroidism
- Avoid cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, broccoli, kale and turnips as it interferes with Thyroid hormone production.
- Soy and soy products like soy nuggets and tofu have to be avoided as these will hinder Thyroid hormone production.
- Gluten containing food such as bread, chapathi, roti, naan, kulcha, should be taken under restriction.
- Sugary food and fatty food should be avoided as it lowers basal metabolism.
- Include food rich in Vitamin A, C and E, as they clean and enhance the functioning of thyroid gland.
- Consume fresh fruits (especially citrus and berries) and raw sprouts to get Vitamin C, as it will be destroyed when subjected to heat.
- Include Yellow, orange fruits and vegetables to provide Vitamin A.
- Walnuts, say 2 in a day provides Vitamin E and selenium.
- Processed food contains lot of preservatives and sodium, which with induce hypothyroidism, hence need to be avoided.
- Use coffee only 8 hrs after the thyroid medication, as coffee blocks absorption of thyroid hormone replacement.
- Avoid or restrict use of alcohol, as it suppresses thyroid hormone production and is toxic to the thyroid gland.
- Use only iodised salt.
- Exercise or walk for 30 minutes a day to keep your BMR high.
- Consume small frequent feeds to maintain high BMR.
