Magnesium & its role

Introduction – Magnesium is a metallic element that is found in the intracellular fluids of the body. Normally  20-28g of magnesium is contained in the human body of an adult, 89 per cent of which is held within the cells as per statistics. Mostly magnesium is found in the bones or muscles, while only 1 -3 per cent is found in the intracellular fluid or blood serum. This signifies the  analysis of blood serum does not give representative measurement for magnesium levels in the cells & tissues.

RDA of Mg – The RDA for this mineral is around 300mg-350mg for pregnant women and nursing mothers requiring 450-500mg per day. Good sources of magnesium include green vegetables, leafy vegetables, whole flour,cereals all organic foods like milk, eggs, fish,pulses, seafoods,nuts ( especially peanuts), lean meat ,red meat and all vegan&  their products. Absorption of the Mg into the bloodstream occurs though the intestines & simultaneously this uptake is highly variable.

Absorption of Mg – Generally around 30-40 per cent of the magnesium available is taken up by foods. Absorption is better while fortifications by dietary intake of calcium, phosphorus, proteins, saturated animal fat and fibre. The balance of magnesium in humans always balance in the human urine, and this is normally between 100 and 150mg per day. Higher levels of magnesium in the blood serum correlate to an increase in the level of magnesium eliminated via the urine.

Metabolism by Mg – There is a process  linked with calcium and sodium loss in the urine. In the body, magnesium is essential for the production and activation of many enzymes that regulate the metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids and nucleotides .Magnesium works as a co-factor for  90 enzymes in energy metabolism in our body metabolisms.

Brain Functioning – It is required to allow proper functioning of neuro chemical transmissions and is vital for normal muscle function. In the cell it is vital for cell division and for the reactions with phosphates. If deficiency of magnesium, the permeability of the cell membranes changes, causing potassium and magnesium to be lost and replaced by sodium and calcium. This ultimately gives rise to a substance called AMP (Adenosine monophosphate) that eventually leads to cell death.

Bones & Mg – Magnesium is also needed for healthy bones and teeth and proper nerve function, and it allows vitamins B (thiamin ) and B12 (cyanocobalamin ) to carry out their proper roles in the body. Magnesium acts on the heart muscle and the whole circulatory system as it nprevents an increase in blood pressure. Deficiency of magnesium seems to lead to muscle weakness and fatigue and possible development of cardiac arrhythmia.  Too little magnesium may cause renal disorders , where calcium deposits from in the kidney tissue, and this can be prevented by magnesium supplementation.

Risk with Mg– Additional magnesium can also reduce the risk of occurrence of myocardial infarction, where a coronary artery becomes blocked, and it also reduces the chances of a second infarction occurring later in life.

Daily Intake – Around daily intake is around 120-240mg up to 14years of age where as 300-350mg for adults as per normal lifestyles ,but this may be variable in case of disorders.
