The hormones, triiodothyronine ( T3) and its pro hormone, thyroxine (T4) are tyrosine based hormones produced by the thyroid gland that are primarily responsible for regulation of metabolism. The thyroid gland is a major organ in the human body. And failing to produce enough hormones in the body leads to hypothyroidism.

What is Hypothyroidism

This  is a condition related to having an underactive thyroid gland that does not properly make or release thyroid hormones. It has been seen that that women, especially older women, are the most susceptible group for developing hypothyroidism.

Causes

People who are elderly or who have other existing autoimmune disease like type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and celiac disease are also at a high risk. Inflammatory disorder of thyroid gland, poor diet especially lacking in iodine and selenium and hormonal imbalance can results to the condition of hypothyroidism. Besides these, genetic cause called congenital hypothyroidism is also seen in some cases. And interaction of certain medication and high levels of emotional stress can lead to this serious condition.

Symptoms

People suffering from hypothyroidism have some common symptoms such as depression, anxiety, fatigue, weight gain, infertility, feeling cold, constipation, muscle ache and tenderness, stiffness and swelling in the joints, loss of hair, rough and cracked skin, breathing problem, changes in the menstrual cycle and more frequent cold due to low immune function. Mild hypothyroidism is usually the early stage and can progress into hypothyroidism if diet of hypothyroidism is not adopted and life style changes in this crucial condition is most important.

Home based simple diet for Hypothyroidism

A patient of hypothyroidism should consume these foods to help with this problem :

  • plenty amounts of antioxidant rich fruits and vegetables such as blueberries, tomatoes
  • eating foods high in B vitamin like whole grains may also help.
  • Eating selenium rich foods such as sunflower seeds or brazil nuts can be beneficial because selenium is needed for enzymes that make thyroid hormones to work properly.
  • Seaweeds are the best natural source of iodine, these help prevent deficiencies which disturb thyroid function and should appear in your weekly hypothyroidism diet.
  • probiotic rich foods like kefir helps to create a healthy gut environment by balancing micro flora bacteria
  • high fiber diet (30gm-40gm fiber/day) helps in digestive difficulties in hypothyroidism; it improves heart health, balances blood sugar levels and supports a healthy weight.

And some foods must be avoided by the patient in order to prevent recurrence of hypothyroidism symptoms. These foods includes soya; studies suggest that phyto-oestrogens in soyabeans and soya rich foods may inhibit the activity of enzyme that makes the thyroid hormones.
