Pulses are the edible seeds of plants belonging to the legumes family .Pulses are dried seed like lentils, dried peas, edible beans. The mostly or commonly used pulses are Bengal gram ( chana dal ),red gram ( tuver dal ),green gram ( mung dal ),black gram( urad dal ).Pulses come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours. These are available in the forms of like whole or split, ground in to flours rich in  fibers, starch & plenty of protein.

Pulses are one of the best sources of Dietary Fibers –

According to dietary guidelines men need 38gm per day & women need 25gm per day.There are two types of fibres  soluble as well insoluble fibres. Here pulses contains both the fibres .Soluble fiber  especially help in lowering blood cholesterol and glucose level found in oats, peas, beans, apples, citrus fruits, carrots, barely some more where as Insoluble fiber-  helps to prevent constipation by increasing the bulk of the stool. These are mostly found in the whole grains, wheat cereals and vegetables such as carrots, and tomatoes. Most plant based foods, such as oatmeal and beans contains both soluble and insoluble fibre.

Pulses are great sources of protein –

We can not find any of the Indian family taking lunch or dinner without pulses as these are best & cheapest sources  & compulsory food elements with any staple meals. This is must as dal or dal soup with either rice or chapatti in all families in every pocket of India.
