Tips To Keep Our Kidney Health

kidneys, the excretory organs are powerful chemical factories that perform the following functions:

  • They help to remove our waste products like urea, uric acid, creatinine from the body.
  • They balance the body’s fluid balance. They not only maintain the volume of the body fluids but also their electrolytic composition.
  • Kidney releases hormones like Renin, that regulate our blood pressure
  • Kidney can produce an active form of vitamin D that promotes strong, healthy bones
  • Kidney also produces erythropoietin that controls the production of red blood cells.

Kidneys are affected  mainly in older age due to two reasons:

The first one is :

  • During aging, it is very common to decrease in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and renal blood flow (RBF) and water and salt metabolism regulation. The GFR falls due to the reductions in the rate of flow of glomerular capillary plasma rate and also occurs Changes in the activity of the renin hormone and nitric oxide systems appear to be particularly important and if the above changes occur it may predispose the older kidney to acute kidney injury (AKI).
  • The second one is :

Fatty deposits, cholesterol are deposited in the inner lining of the arteries which can cause the blockage of the renal artery and as a result of it the kidneys’ are unable to filter and reduce the blood supply and these results in high blood pressure and reduced kidney function. This is the most common cause of kidney failure in the elderly.

It is very common for the maximum renal patient that their creatinine level is elevated in such conditions which signify impaired kidney function and as a result of it; creatinine level in the blood will rise due to poor clearance of creatinine by the kidneys. Abnormally high levels of creatinine cause the malfunction or failure of the kidneys. Feeling dehydrated, fatigue, swelling (edema,) shortness of breath, confusion-these symptoms are highly associated with the elevated levels of creatinine.

In case if the above conditions  occur  then we have to restrict some food items which are enriched in sodium, potassium, phosphorus and protein containing foods. Sodium-containing foods mainly salted foods, pickles, sausages, canned soups, processed meats etc and then potassium containing foods are avocados, bananas, oranges, prunes, potatoes, spinach, tomatoes, beans and brown rice, phosphorus-containing foods are include milk,  whole-grain bread, bran cereal, oatmeal, nuts and lastly high protein containing foods which include high-biological-value proteins, like meat, poultry, milk or soy foods.

Basic dietary suggestions:

Low-protein and low-salt diet can help to reduce the burden on our kidneys.

SOME IMPORTANT TIPS TO MAINTAIN A PROPER KIDNEY HEALTH….

  • We should drink plenty of fluid which will help our kidneys so that it can function properly. Because due to dehydration creatinine level gets high.
  • We should keep our blood pressure at the target which is normal for our body.
  • If we have diabetes then we must control our blood glucose level.
  • Another important factor i.e cholesterol level, it should be kept within the target range.
  • We must avoid to the intake of alcohol.
  • Most importantly, we must be more physically active. We have to lose weight if we are overweight.
  • Cigarette smoking can make kidney damage worse, so we should free from it.
