CHRONIC GASTRITIS AND DIET
Chronic gastritis is a major problem faced by many. Pain, flatulence impairs day to day activity.
What is chronic gastritis?
Chronic gastritis occurs when there is inflammation in the stomach lining.
Cause of Chronic gastritis –
• NSAID (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs )
• Helicobacter pylori
• Autoimmune problem
• Sarcoidosis
• Crohn’s disease
• Isolated granulomatosis gastritis
• HIV / AIDS
• Alcohol consumption
Symptoms of chronic gastritis
 Bloating
 Early satiety
 Unexplained weight loss
 Loss appetite
 Belching
 Vomiting
 Nausea
Diet for chronic gastritis –
 Vegetable – Vegetables are rich in fibre, vitamin, and minerals. Vegetable should be consumed around 3 to 4 serving in a day. Some vegetables are gas producing like radish, cabbage, cauliflower they should be avoided. Pepper, chillies create irritation in the stomach lining. Papaya juice, cooked bottle gourd, bitter gourd etc are non-gas forming vegetable.
 Diary product – Diary product excellent source of calcium, vitamin D, but the dairy product should be consumed in limited proportion. Warm milk can cause gas and irritation on the stomach lining. Buttermilk, curd, toned cream, pudding should be provided, but the temperature of the food should not be very high or low.
 Fruit – Fruits are the best source of minerals, antioxidant, photochemical, fibre. Good choices of fruits for chronic gastritis are the banana, apple or apple juice, pear, peaches, kiwi, grapes, melons. Some fruits should be avoided because they create irritation and inflammation like berries, figs, orange, grapefruit, dried fruit and berries.
 Grains – Grains should be 6 to 9 serving in our daily diet. Whole grain, bread, rice, barley, potato are good for gastritis patients. Some grains should be avoided because it creates gas and inflammation, those are bread, coarse cereal, potato chip or French fries, fatty fried pastries etc.
 Meat, poultry, fish – Fish, meat, poultry can be tolerated during gastritis. The best choices are seafood, fish, poultry, tofu, soybean, lean and tender meat, skinless poultry. Avoid back-dated, frozen, fried, high fat, high seasoned, spicy preparation should be avoided. Grilling, broiling, roasting are the best cooking method to choose for chronic gastritis.
 Beverage – Fluids are good for cleaning inner system. Fluid intake should be 9-8 litre in a day. Fluid should be majorly in form of water. Tea, coffee,alcohol are highly seasoned drinks ,carbonated be beverages , hot cocoa should be avoided.
Whole day diet of Gastritis –
On rising – 2 glass of plain water
Breakfast – Rice flakes/ wheat flakes, curd, egg white – 1 pc
Mid morning – Fruit -100gm (apple / pear / papaya)
Lunch – Rice – 1 bowl / 2 phulkas, 1 bowl vegetable, i bowl low consistency dal / sambar /  buttermilk. Chicken breast- 75gm, 1 whole cucumber.
Evening snack – 1 bowl pudding
Dinner – 2 phulkas , 1 bowl vegetable,1 low consistency dal, buttermilk , 1 whole cucumber

In chronic gastritis, proper food regime should be followed along with medication.
