Hello, Oral steroids are required for treating Asthma if the symptoms are severe and they do help to relieve the symptoms. If your son does not have severe symptoms now and also if he is able to use inhalers/rotahalers then these are better options than oral medications. Hgh dose oral steroids over a long period of time can cause side effects on sugar levels, blood pressures, bone health and weight. A good idea is to get your son re-evaluated and examined. We advise all our asthma patients to regularly visit their doctors so that medications can be titrated and optimal dose given to avoid side effects. Hope this answers your question, Regards, Dr Gowri Kulkarni
