My 10 Year Old Son Has Asthma.

Anonymous asked 8 years ago

My 10 year old son has asthma. He used asthma preventer. What is the effect of using asthma preventer long term? I heard that using this for year might cause bone shrinkage. Is it true? Are there any supplement or vitamin to help this vision?

Hello, I see that you are concerned about your son’s health. I am presuming that the medicine that your son uses as a preventer contains a mild steroid. It is required to take the medicine in the form of inhaler/rotahaler to reduce symptoms in the long term. Steroids are known to cause bone depletion if taken over a long period of time. But we need to understand that this is only if it is taken at a very high dose usually more than 7.5mg per day orally for more than 3 months at a stretch.  Your doctor may ask you to reduce the dosage or stop the preventer if he sees that your son has significantly improved.  The best thing to do is to have a high calcium diet and eat a balanced meal. Also, it is very important to have regular follow ups with your doctor to ascertain the need of medication based on health status of the child. Do not stop asthma medications without consulting your doctor. Hope this answers your question, Regards, Dr Gowri Kulkarni
