Relation of some foods with depression

 

Depression is a general state of low mood, that can affect thoughts, behaviour, feelings and sense of well-being.

Cause of depression

  1. Abuse: past emotion, sexual or emotional abuse cause depression
  2. Medication: Accutane, the antiviral drug interferon-alpha, and corticosteroids responsible for depression
  3. Conflicts: This may create depression eventually at any personal or social level.
  4. Death:  grief from the death or loss of a loved one.
  5. Genetics: many different genes that each exert small effects, rather than a single gene that contributes to disease risk
  6. Substance abuse: Nearly 30% of people with substance abuse problems also have depression

Foods that cause depression:

Refined sugar:  blood glucose levels are elevated, levels of a protein that encourage the growth of neurons and synapses drops.

Artificial sweetener: Aspartame is bad stuff. It blocks the production of the neurotransmitter  serotonin and causes mood go low

Processed food: Jelly ,bean, pasta, pizza, donuts etc cause initial insulin boost, you will end up fatigued, irritated, and blue.

Hydrogenated oil: hydrogenated oils and contains trans fats could potentially contribute to depression

Foods high in sodium: excess sodium in these products can disrupt your neurological system, contributing to depression, and can affect your immune system response, causing fatigue

Alcohol: central nervous system controls motor functions as well as thinking, understanding, and reasoning. It also controls emotion. Alcohol consumption effect the entire system, it is known as a depressant.

Caffeine:  This is a powerful stimulant  can affect  severely the sleep even at minimum level due to hyper stimulation of hypothalamus & also  disturbances affect mood. Further, some it may causes allergy, nausea, G.I. discomforts.

Food that beat depression      

Magnesium:  improve mood and energy by producing and supporting the brain chemical serotonin . E.g. almond, amaranth, oats, sunflower seeds.

Omega 3 food:  dietary omega-3 consumption helps reduce depression, eg: Walnut, hemp ,Salomon , sardine , sea fishes.

High fibre food: It lowers the total rise of blood glucose level in the body and helps evening mood.

Folic acid : Folic acid can prevent an excess of homocysteine which restricts the production of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine which are strong stimulants .In the foods lists, the common examples are  tomato, goat liver, sprouts, Bengal gram dal etc..
