Why Hyperprolactinemia and solution

Hyperprolactinemia is an endocrinal system disease in which body produces an excess amount of prolactin hormone and as a result, it stimulates breast growth during pregnancy and enhances milk secretion during lactation. But when there is no pregnancy then this higher levels of prolactin causes infertility and decreased sexual desire in both the genders by decreasing the levels of sex hormones (oestrogen and testosterone). Even insufficient secretion of prolactin by women faces problems with ovulation, menstrual cycle, infertility and galactorrhea etc.

Symptoms of Hyperprolactinemia in women:

  • Excess discharge from nipples
  • Without pregnancy discharge of breast milk
  • Amenorrhoea i.e. lack of menstruation or irregularity of menstrual cycles.
  • Ovulation problems
  • Vaginal dryness causes painful intercourse
  • Recurrent miscarriages

Symptoms of Hyperprolactinemia in men:

  • Impotence
  • Gynecomastia (Male breast enlargement)
  • Headaches or vision disturbances which affect optic nerve.
  • Low muscle mass
  • Insufficient body hair

Causes of Hyperprolactinemia:

Temporarily rise of prolactin levels may be caused by insufficient sleep, pregnancy, lactation, handling of breasts, stress and due to intense exercises.  It may also cause by disease of the pituitary gland, either benign or non-cancerous pituitary tumour which secretes prolactin and interferes with dopamine production to inhibit prolactin secretion.

Other causes of hyperprolactinemia are hypothyroidism, PCOs, chronic liver or kidney diseases, trauma to the chest wall, rib cage, diaphragm and upper abdomen. Besides this, some pain medications, antidepressants, antipsychotic, medications for ulcer and GERD and oestrogen treatment for menopause are also the factors of hyperprolactinemia.

Treatment:

To treat hyperprolactinemia, first of all, you have to take care of your endocrine system and pituitary glands which are the major gland of the endocrine system that regulates thyroid, adrenal and reproductive glands and also produces prolactin.

Then you have to find out the reason behind hyperprolactinemia. If the high level of prolactin is drug induced then consult a physician to change your medication. For hypothyroidism, patient consults a physician for synthetic thyroid hormone to maintain your normal prolactin levels.
