Mineral water is the water which is obtained from the mineral spring, it contains various minerals such as sulphur compound and salt.

Composition of mineral water-

More the magnesium and calcium ions are dissolved in the water, it is considered to be hard water. Water with a low ratio of magnesium and calcium ions is described as soft. According to FDA mineral water is classify as the water which contains 250 parts per million total dissolved solid. In European union bottled water is called mineral water when it has been bottled at the source and has undergone no or minimal treatment. Permitted is the removal of magnesium, sulphur, and iron, arsenic through decantation treatment with ozone or filtration.

Why should we drink mineral water?

Plain distilled water is low in mineral whereas mineral water contains the mineral. Mineral water contains 4 times more calcium and magnesium than that of the tap water. It has been found that people can lower their blood pressure if they can drink one litre of mineral water daily.  Benefits of mineral water are:

  1. Hydration – Proper hydration keep our health in the good state. Adequate hydration keeps our body cool, keep our nose, mouth, eyes moist, promotes optimal muscle and joint function, healthy skin, clearing body’s toxin. Lower the blood volume for better cardiovascular health
  2. Enrich in calcium- Mineral water is the source of calcium. The amount of calcium varies with a different brand. Some of the mineral water contains 348 mg of calcium per litre. Calcium is essential to maintain bone strength, muscle function including heart function, cell signalling, hormone secretion, nerve transmission.
  3. Add magnesium to the diet- Magnesium plays important role in many of the biological function which includes synthesis of protein, nerve and muscle function, regulation of the blood pressure and blood sugar. Mineral water contains 108 mg of magnesium per litre, it is 29 % of RDA.

What is a disadvantage of mineral water?

  1. The plastic bottle is not safe- Vastly the mineral water is marketed in a plastic bottle. The plastic bottle is not biodegradable Plastic bottle may be recycled only 6-7 bottle per 10 bottles is recycled. The plastic bottle is not environment-friendly.
  2. Bottle water contains toxic- Bottle water may contain toxic if they are mixed with BPA. Now day’s bottled water is manufactured excluding BPA free plastic. It has been found the chemical in plastic seep out to the water when it is exposed to the heat. This chemical may lead to endocrine disturbance.
