HOW CORTISOL RESPONSIBLE FOR WEIGHT GAIN & SOME HELPFUL FOODS

It has been found that there is a direct connection between cortisol and weight gain.

How cortisols cause weight gain?

In the steroid community, cortisol is the hormone, it is also known as glucocorticoid. As a part of the daily hormone cycle cortisol is produced from the adrenal gland. It is also a key hormone which acts during stress that is both physical and mental stress. Cortisol is responsible to increase body’s blood pressure. It also suppresses body’s immunity system. The constant state of stress can lead to weight gain of the individual. Exposure of cortisol for a long time can lead to increase weight gain. Our appetite increases and insulin level also increases. Continuous level of stress can lead to excess secretion of the cortisol production and it stimulates glucose production. It increases fat storage and deposition. An excess amount of cortisol leads to tiredness and fatigue. Stress induced cortisol weight gain is generally around waist and hip. IF the waist and hip ratio goes up then it can lead heart problem, diabetes.

Food which contains cortisol-

The foods which contain cortisol are

  1. Seeds and vegetable oil- seeds and vegetable oil like sunflower, corn, soy, and canola are the highly processed oil, these are heated, treated and washed with chemicals hexane. Over processed of this oil can lead to contamination and toxin. The seeds and vegetable oil can increase the cortisol production in our body.
  2. Trans fat- The trans fat that is it remains in semi solid state in the room temperature. It raises the cortisol level in our body. The packaged junk food contains trans fat which is mentioned on the label. It promotes body’s weight gain.
  3. Beef- Factory farm beef can elevate the cortisol level in our body.
  4. Alcohol- Alcohol depresses our mood, it also stresses our liver, it also increases the cortisol level in our body. When an individual is drunk after intense exercise cortisol level increases. Long term use of alcohol is quite bad it can lead to hormonal imbalance.
  5. Fat-free flavored yogurt- The fat-free yogurts are highly processed and different preservative and chemicals are used to get it flavor and taste.  This yogurt enhances our cortisol level in our body.
  6. Low fiber carbohydrate- Low fiber carbohydrate is easily digested in our body. It can lead to a greater increase in insulin and blood sugar level. It is then followed by cortisol release. Low fiber foods are generally refined foods like cake pastry, white bread, pasta, noodles etc.
  7. Fruit juices – Increase fruit consumption can lead to increase cortisol curve in our body. In the fruit, juice fibers are removed and sugar and preservatives are added to the fruit juice, this elevates cortisol level which leads to weight gain.
  8. Chocolate cakes- The industrially prepared many of the chocolate cake have more refined sugar and poor anti oxidant. This can lead to increase cortisol level in our body.
