BEST DIETARY ADVICE FOR PREGNANCY 3 RD TRIMESTER WITH GESTATIONAL DIABETES

Diabetes during pregnancy affects the fetus development.

Gestational diabetes

Pregnant woman without any history of diabetes may experience high blood sugar level; this is known as gestational diabetes

Cause- It has been found that placental hormone which facilitates the fetus growth may act as insulin resistant and enhance the blood sugar level in the body.

Nutritional requirement of gestational diabetes in 3 rd trimester

Calorie-  38 kcal /kg ideal body weight.

Carbohydrate-  40 % of the total calorie intake.

Fat- 20 % of total calorie intake

Protein-  25 % of total calorie intake.

Dietary advice

  1. The inclusion of high fiber food- It is recommended to have plenty of high fiber food, which is low glycemic index. Foods like fruits, vegetable, peas, beans, and pulses can be added.
  2. Reduce saturated fat intake- It is better to use polyunsaturated-rich oil like Saffola, sunflower, rice bran oil. It is better to grill or bake the food item rather than frying. It is better to have nuts and seeds as snacks than milk chocolate.
  3. Eat healthy breakfast- It is better to have good healthy breakfast in the morning. The foods which are rich in fiber can be given to the patient. The whole grain cereals like brown bread, chapatti, oats, and Brocken wheat are the best option. It is better to avoid sugar coated cereals, white bread with jam & jelly.
  4. Avoid skipping the meal- In order to control blood sugar level, it is better to have small frequent meals. Minimum 7-8 meals should be consumed. The meal should be light and rich in fiber, vitamin, and minerals.
  5. Avoid fruit and vegetable juices- It is better to have cooked vegetable and whole raw fruit than juices. Fruit juice lack of fiber and fructose content is high.
  6. Limit fruit intake- It is better to have whole fruit in limited number. 1-2 serving in a day is good. Too much fruit consumption can elevate sugar level as it has more natural sugar. Canned fruit, mixed fruit, juice should be avoided.
  7. Reduce starch food intake- Starch food intake should be low in a daily diet. Brown rice can be consumed once or twice in a week in the afternoon.
  8. Avoid sweets & desserts- It is recommended to avoid sweets and desserts as much as possible. Desserts & sweets have high sugar and fat, it elevates blood sugar level in our body, and high saturated fat is bad for the heart health. Instead of opting candy, marshmallows, gulab jamun, fruits cuts in yogurts can be consumed or raita is also a good option.
  9. Milk intake should be limited- Whole milk should be avoided, skimmed milk or double tone milk can be consumed. Milk intake should be one serving in a day, curd or buttermilk can be consumed.
  10. Fasting and feasting should be avoided- Fasting or long gap in between the meal should be avoided. Eating too much at a time should be avoided;
