Dietary Advice For Tuberculosis Patients

 

DIETARY ADVICE FOR TUBERCULOSIS PATIENTS:

 

INTRODUCTION:

Tuberculosis is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria which at generally infects to the lungs and may also spread to the Brain, Kidney, Bones, Joints, Lymph node, Spine. It is one of the very infectious and deadly diseases of the world.

 SYMPTOMS OF TUBERCULOSIS:

The symptoms include:

  • Loss of weight
  • Sweating at night
  • Weakness of muscles along with fatigue
  • Continue cough with blood
  • Wheezing sound comes during breathing

CLASSES OF TUBERCULOSIS:

Tuberculosis not always shows symptoms it can be asymptomatic. In asymptomatic T.B infective bacteria presents in the lungs without any symptoms and only T.B tests results positive but it cannot infect others like symptomatic tuberculosis.

HOW TUBERCULOSIS DISPERSE:

It is a communicable disease but it cannot spread with drinking and eating together, using similar clothing, shaking hand. Tuberculosis is mainly airborne disease. Diseased persons sneezed or coughed out air is a major factor of catching this disease to others.

WHO ARE PRONE TO TUBERCULOSIS?

Tuberculosis can infect to both sex and at any age but some people are at more risk like

  • Weaker immune systems like People with HIV or AIDS infections or who are undergoing chemotherapy treatment.
  • People with Malnutrition
  • People living in Unsanitary and unhygienic environment
  • Who are exposed to infected persons

 

DIETARY ADVICE:

A very good balanced diet is very important to cure tuberculosis.

  • Protein rich diet like lean meats, Pulses, fish, eggs and milk and its products, beans should be included.
  • Incorporate micronutrients in the diet such as
  • Vit-A found in cod liver oil, eggs, carrots and green leafy vegetables
  • Vit-B-6 found in cereals, dry fruits and milk
  • Vit-C found in Citrus fruits like guava, amla etc
  • Iron-rich foods like liver, kidney, whole grain cereals, dark green leafy vegetables like spinach, kale.
  • Antioxidants rich Vegetables and fruits e.g carrot, squash, tomatoes, cherries etc

 AVOIDED LIST:

  • Stop tobacco and alcohol as it increases liver damage
  • Avoid coffee.
  • Refined products like sugar, white bread, polished rice should be minimised
  • Restrict high saturated fats and cholesterol rich foods like butter, red meat etc.
