Potato is a comfort food ,it is a starchy and tuberous crop. Potato is considered as one of the important staple foods Potato is the swollen portion of the stem which is known as the tuber. Next to china India is highest producer of potato. Potato is considered as cool season crop. India generally at winter and in spring potato production increased.

Types of potato

  1. Russet potato (starchy)- classic potato
  2. Jewel yam –potato has sweet taste
  3. Japanese sweet potato-pink to purple skin potato
  4. Hannah sweet potato –light skin
  5. Rose Finn apple-pink, knobby skin with buttery flesh
  6. Russian banana pale -yellow skin with yellow flesh inside
  7. Red thumb – bright red skin with pink flesh
  8. French fingerling – pink skin and yellow flesh

9. Larete –Finger shaped potato

  1. Austrian crescent – tan and yellowish skin potato

Why we should not ignore the potato in our diet-

  1. Blood pressure reducing capacity–Potato has blood pressure lowering agent Kukoamines.
  2. Cardiovascular health maintenance-Potato contains vitamin B6 which plays important role in methylation. Methylation can change the homocysteine into benign substance.Homocysteine causes damage to the blood vessel walls.
  3. Enhance the athletic performance- Vitamin B6 helps in breaks down of glycogen, in which is present in muscle cells and liver. An athlete can get immediate energy fuel.
  4. Boost the immunity –Potato contains vitamin c which prevents scurvy, common cold symptoms.
  5. Digestion – Potato can be easy digested as it mainly contains starch and if it is consumed with skin then it adds fibre to the diet.
  6. Brain and neural health- The B6 in potato helps to from brain chemicals like serotonin, dopamine and     norepinephrine. Consumption of rotation during the depression, stress and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is helpful.
  7. Skincare– Potato contains vitamin B6, phosphorous ,potassium, vitamin c magnesium and zinc, which promote smooth and shiny skin.

Some of the ill effect of potato on our health-

  • Potato is starchy, high fat content and it has higher calories consumption of too much potato can cause enhancement in weight.
  • Starch except the rice can cause bloating and gas pain
  • Potato has high glycemic index, consumption of adequate amount potato can raise sugar level in blood.

How can we use potato in our daily diet?

As we know potato has both advantage and disadvantage so we should be careful in introducing potato in our daily diet. We can have baked, grilled potato items with salad , fish and vegetable. Extensive use of fried, deep fried , processed potato should be avoided In our daily diet.

Potato can be a hero to save your life as well as it can act as a villain if it is used inadequate amount.
