Remember That Vitamin-D Is Indispensible Through Out The Life

The importance of vitamin-D in our daily life

Vitamin-D is a group of vitamins which can found in liver and fish oils and they are essential for the absorption of calcium and the prevention of rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults. Vitamin-D includes calciferol (vitamin D2) and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3).

The main highlighted points about vitamin-D are………….

  • Vitamin D along with calcium helps to build up our bones and keep our bones strong and healthy.
  • It blocks the release of parathyroid hormone. This hormone reabsorbs bone tissue which makes the bones thin and brittle.
  • Vitamin D may also play a role in muscle function and the immune system.  It helps to protect against infections and other illnesses.
  • Vitamin-D also decreases our chance of developing heart disease.
  • Vitamin D might play an important role in regulating our mood and warding off depression.

Symptoms of vitamin-D deficiency:

  • Symptoms of bone pain and muscles weakness can mean that we have a vitamin D deficiency.
  • Cognitive impairment in older adults
  • Severe asthma in children
  • Cancer

The sources of vitamin D:  we can get vitamin D through sun exposure, from our diet and through supplements.

The medical conditions that can cause Vitamin D deficiency:

  1. During the liver and kidney disease, reduce the amount of an enzyme needed to change vitamin D to a form that is used in the body.
  2. This weight-loss surgery which removes the part of the stomach and/or the intestines which can lower the nutrients which help to absorb vitamin D into our body.A body mass index greater than 30 is associated with lower vitamin D levels. It is known that the fat actually holds onto the vitamin D does not allow it to be released into the bloodstream.
  3. People who are homebound or rarely go outside are not able to use sun exposure as a source of vitamin D.
  4. Vitamin D levels can be lowered by using certain medications. These include laxative, any kind of steroids,cholesterol-lowering drugs.

How we can cope up with vitamin D deficiency and how can it be treated?

The answer of the above questions is mentioned in the following paragraph ……….

The goals of treatment and prevention are the same which means to reach and maintain an adequate level of vitamin D in the body. A combination of methods is used to do this, including:

  • We have to eat more foods that contain vitamin D which include milk and milk products, cod liver oil, fruit juices fortified with vitmin -D, egg yolk, cheese, soy milk, beef liver, fatty fishes like tuna, salmon, mushroom and whole grain cereals etc.
  • Getting some exposure to sunshine but not too much. Exactly how much sun exposure is needed daily not clear till now. Five to fifteen minutes of sun exposure two to three times a week to the face, arms, legs or back may be all of these organs that are needed to absorb a suitable amount of vitamin D. Older people who have with darker skin color and those who are living in northern climates should need more sun exposure.

However, it is said by the researchers that too much sun exposure can cause skin cancer.

  • Using of vitamin D supplements is important after a certain time. After a certain age (after menopausal) when vitamin deficiency can occur then we have to consult or follow doctor’s advice about the doses i.e how much vitamin-D supplement we should intake at these specific time period. So that we can combat against osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, bone cancer etc.
