The Fad Diet

“I hardly eat food and I slog in the gym and even then my weight is not reduced in gms also” exclaimed a client recently. “Diet” may be the most mis-understood word in the world of nutrition. You hear everyone say this at some point of time in life that I am on a diet (which according to them is starving). Diet simply meals eating food. It does not mean all that we imagine or tag along in the first place. However it is quite impossible to make people believe that diet is just a word for eating right.

We hear this all the time – a balanced diet. It is imagined to be tasteless and having only greens and veggies and fruits. So what, after all, is this balanced diet? As a preschooler we learn the food chart and we still do not implement that in our life.

  • 70+% of our body is water: Brain has 76% water, muscles have 75% water, blood is 82% water, lungs is 90% water, and bones have 25% water. The least we could do is replenish this water everyday. An average adult requires 8 glasses of water a day.
  • Healthy fats like the omega-3 help in supporting our system to produce hormones and keeping the brain sharp. Don’t avoid fats; include them in every meal in moderate quantity, as they are calorie dense and required in small quantities; these can include nuts, seeds, fish etc.
  • Proteins are the building blocks and 27% of our body is protein. Every cell is made of protein. Its important that we have healthy proteins in our diet.
  • Complex carbs are required on a day to day basis to help perform physical activities and they also assist in internal involuntary functions of our body.

This is a brief outline of a balanced diet. However we ignore the fact that our body requires all these nutrients on a daily basis and only end up starving to lose weight. If you are looking to be healthy, then start eating the right things first and do not deprive your body of the nutrition it requires. Do an over hauling of your body every 3 months by doing a clean-eating diet which majorly involves fruits and vegetables along with a detox. This helps in keeping your immunity levels high with every season change and also does not allow your body to go into storage mode which is usually the case with fad diets. Do not try to follow the N number of restrictive diets on the internet and cause damage to your health that is irreparable.

It is wise to keep our body in top health, as it is the only place we have to live in !!
