Bad breath, medically known as halitosis, is an unpleasant odour of the mouth. It is often one of the first signs that something might be wrong internally. Bad breath can also be made worse by the types of foods you eat and other unhealthy lifestyle habits. It can occur on occasion, or it can be a chronic condition. Bad breath can result from poor dental health habits and may be a sign of other health problems.

Why does it occur?

• Unclear mouth with particles of decomposing food, pyorrhoea, stomatitis (inflammation of gums) and dental cavities.
• Throat infection and septic tonsils or sinus troubles.
• Consumption of fatty, fried items, onion, garlic gives foul smell of breath.
• Problems related to digestive system like indigestion, hyperacidity, diarrhoea etc.

Preventive and Curative Measures:

• Curative and preventive measures include proper oral hygiene.
• Cultivate healthy dietary habits.
• Eat food at regular timing.
• Get treated for your digestive ailment at the earliest.
• Use herbs, coriander leaves for cooking and choose fresh vegetables.
• Consume lots of raw salads, sprouts and substitute tea and coffee with herbal tea with tulsi, mint and ginger. Go for green tea with flavour of your choice.
• Try for the following herbal – oral mouth wash solution.
Boil one cup of water with one cinnamon stick (Dalchini), 1 tsp spoon of lemon juice, 3 cloves (laung) for 10 minutes. Cool and store in refrigerator. This solution can be used as a mouthwash to gargle twice a day.
