PCOS AND OBESITY IN UNMARRIED WOMEN

PCOs or polycystic ovarian syndrome stands for ‘Multiple Cysts’’ i.e. enlarged ovaries with many small cysts. It is a hormonal imbalance which leads to irregular periods, unwanted hair growth, acne, weight gain and dark patches on skin. It is a common problem in unmarried girls & women who are obese and it is very difficult to shed weight for them. Keeping weight under control is very essential for them to control their hormonal levels.

PCOs is caused when pituitary gland imbalances the hormone secretion and affects the ovaries. The major two female hormones produced by ovaries are Oestrogen and Progesterone which control the menstrual cycle. Ovaries also makes little bit amount of male hormones testosterone.

PCOs are generally caused when either LH (Luteinizing hormone) or Insulin levels are higher. High level of insulin and testosterone interfere with the ovarian follicles development and these result into development of many unmatured follicles which causes ovulation problem followed by irregular periods and fertility and it also puts extra pressure on ovaries to produce extra testosterone hormone which is mainly a male hormone which will cause unwanted hair growth.

Some lifestyle changes and dietary changes are necessary to follow along with medications to recover from PCOs.

Life Style Changes:

  • Drink Plenty Of Water: Proper hydration flushes out the toxins out from the body and also avoids water retention which makes them lighter. Drink at least 2 Lt/d of water.
  • Exercise: Exercise helps in PCOs for a weight loss plan and also manages insulin level. It also induces the release of stress hormones like Serotonin and Dopamine which brings down the stress level and thus helps to control weight as stress is a major factor of weight gain and PCOs.

Diet: Following a proper diet manages insulin levels which prevent Diabetes and Weight loss too.

 AVOID:

  • Sugary foods like cakes, cookies, sweets, chocolates and desserts which increase blood sugar level which puts extra stress for the body, result weight gain which is a major factor of PCOs in unmarried ones.
  • Simple Carbohydrates like white rice, white bread, and Pastas, potatoes
  • Junk, fast and fried foods and red meats.
  • Refined white flour and its products as they are low in chromium and it is an important mineral for regulating insulin levels and blood sugar.
  • Soft drinks, sodas and canned fruit juices, tea and coffee.
  • Saturated fats like butter, ghee and margarine as they support weight gain.
